鈥淭his project is about creating spaces that empower our students, fostering their physical and mental wellbeing alongside academic achievement,鈥 said Principal Julia Shea. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about more than just sports鈥攊t鈥檚 about building resilience, confidence, and lifelong health.鈥

Modern Facilities for Future Generations

The need for the precinct was identified in MLC鈥檚 current masterplan and developed through extensive consultation with students, parents, staff, alumnae, and experts over the last two years. The precinct will include:

  • A state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre featuring an Olympic-sized pool, a dedicated Learn-to-Swim pool, and diving facilities.
  • An Indoor Sports Centre with multifunction courts, a strength and conditioning room, and an expanded gymnasium.
  • An Athletics Hub and outdoor courts for various activities.
  • An underground car park to enhance campus accessibility.
  • Spectator viewing areas, breakout spaces, meeting rooms, caf茅 facilities, and versatile venues for activities, events, and celebrations, fostering connection and collaboration within the MLC community.

鈥淭his precinct reflects MLC鈥檚 tradition of visionary campus development. It ensures today鈥檚 and tomorrow鈥檚 students benefit from spaces that prioritise physical and mental wellbeing alongside academic excellence,鈥 said Board Chair Lucia Cade.

Why Now?

Research highlights the critical importance of physical activity for young people, particularly teenage girls.

  • Physical activity improves mental health, reducing stress and anxiety while boosting self-esteem and confidence.
  • Active students demonstrate better academic outcomes, with enhanced concentration and memory.
  • Alarmingly, by age 17, 90% of girls do not meet recommended activity levels, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' National Health Survey, which highlights the critical need for targeted interventions.

To address these challenges, MLC introduced a Health and Fitness program offering activities such as Pilates and spin classes. Over 420 students participate weekly, demonstrating the demand for diverse and inclusive options.

The new precinct will build on this foundation, providing facilities that inspire students of all interests to stay active, fostering positive lifelong habits.

Construction Timeline

The construction has been carefully planned in two phases to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff while allowing key facilities, such as the Aquatic Centre, to become operational as early as possible

Phase 1 (2025鈥揗id-2026): Construction of the Aquatic Centre, Athletics Hub, outdoor courts, and an enhanced Junior School playground.

Phase 2 (Mid-2026鈥揈nd 2027): Completion of the Indoor Sports Centre, additional outdoor courts, and underground car park.

鈥淲e are honoured to partner with MLC on this transformative project,鈥 said Andrew Deveson, Director, Kapitol Group. 鈥淥ur extensive experience in delivering innovative, sustainable, and community-focused developments ensures we can create a precinct that meets the needs of MLC students, all while minimising disruption during construction. The precinct will set a new benchmark for inclusive, student-centred design and inspire lifelong wellbeing.鈥
